Seriously Thinking About It

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

I guess I will find out shortly if the wife reads my blog. If you see a nuclear cloud erupt over Nashville tonight, that might be my house following the discussion.

I’m seriously thinking about buying this HD 2009 Softail. A sweet ride and I’m perfectly willing and eager to take the wife on rides with me. Honey. Sweetie.

Grand Strand Accolades

Friday, July 9th, 2010

The May issue of Golf Digest listed 7 Myrtle Beach area golf courses in their “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses” list for 2009-2010.

Myrtle Beach placed more public golf courses on the new Golf Digest’s list than any other golf destination in the country, followed by the Pinehurst and Pebble Beach areas.

I’m happy to say that I have played in all three areas and Myrtle Beach is still my favorite area for both quality and variety, hands down.

Houston Breakdown

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

My daughter just called from the side of the road in Houston. Her car has broken down and she needed me to help her find someplace to fix it. Of course, this has to be the holiday weekend and everyone is going to be going out of town or closed.

Her Acura Integra won’t start. She’s at the mall, so that’s good. At least she isn’t stranded on the side of the highway. She can go back into the mall and have a frappacino and make calls on her cell phone in air conditioned comfort while Dad deals with the problem for her.

I did a quick search for Houston auto repair and found a place to call. I hope that calling on a Friday afternoon isn’t going to be a problem. I know most of the places around here will be closed Saturday and Sunday, as usual, but will also be closed on Monday for the Fourth of July holiday.

Hopefully it is something simple, like a  tune up or minor repair. That’s the problem of having the kids grow up and move out of the house and try to be all independent. They don’t do things like simple auto maintenance, and next thing you now, they didn’t do a tune up when needed and then the car won’t start and they call on Dad to help them out.

No Relief in the Gulf

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to spew thousands of gallons of oil into the water. This whole situation is unbelievable to me. How can this continue to gush unabated? Why have they not found a way to plug this thing? Obama seems content with BP’s explanation that they are working as hard as they can to find a solution and that they will clean up all the mess on U. S. land and waters. Meanwhile the wildlife is being killed a terrible death and our waters are being poisoned by the raw oil. The beaches are having tarballs wash up onto the beaches and it is unsafe to swim in the waters of three Gulf states. They have to stop this!

Beach and Golf Next Month

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is going to ruin a lot of people’s livelihoods and a lot of people’s summer vacations. You can’t go to the beach to swim and fish with oil in the water. So, this year we are going to spend a week in Myrtle Beach and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. I’ve found the website, http://www.myrtlebeachgolf.net, to make the plans.

With all the different Myrtle Beach golf courses, you can go there for a week every year, for several years, and always have a new or different golf course to play. So you just have to pick which golf courses you want to play, and use the internet to book your tee times when you book your hotel.

In fact, there are Myrtle Beach golf packages that do that for you automatically. I love the way the internet makes planning a vacation so easy. I can do everything in just a few minutes from home or at work, have everything arranged. Then I turn over the rest of the details to the wife, and she handles the food, the entertainment, and the daily activities for the rest of the family.

Natural Mosquito Repellents

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Planning for a camp out next month, I’ve been looking for a natural mosquito repellent to ward off both mosquitoes and the nasty side effects of DEET, which is the chemical in most commercial mosquito repellents.

Here is a list of health food store types of products that are supposed to work well:

Rub any of the following oils directly on the skin:

  • Citronella: use only pure essential oil of citronella, NOT the fragrance oil. Oils purchased in bulk for burning are not adequate for applying topically to your skin. For skin get high quality citronella essential oil from a natural food store.
  • Soy oil
  • Catnip oil
  • NEEM seed oil: or “neem oil” is extracted from a plant that grows in India and is rubbed on the skin
  • Lavender essential oil

Or, you can eat lots of Fresh Garlic, as mosquitoes don’t like the smell of garlic and will stay clear.

Finding the Right Treatment Center

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

When a good friend of mine realized that she needed help with her dependency on prescription drugs, she searched online for the right drug treatment facility and chose one for several good reasons. She was interested in the treatment program but also interested in the facility. The doctors are hard to judge without meeting them face to face, but the facility is very easy to judge by both their web site and the photos of their property.

Most treatment centers do both drug rehab and alcohol treatment, although most patients need help with just one type of substance abuse. In rare instances, like some big time rock and roll stars, patients abuse multiple substances and using drugs becomes a lifestyle.

My friend had injured her shoulder a few years ago and needed prescription pain killers to be able to continue working and getting through each day. The problem with that is her body built up a tolerance to that medication and she found herself needing more and more pills to just be comfortable and productive. Most physicians do not really know how to effectively help their patients manage pain, and many will just continue handing out prescriptions to the patients who ask for them.

I never did ask her which alcohol treatment center she chose. I know it is in Southern California and that she claimed to take a two week vacation to Los Angeles, when in reality she had checked into a residential rehab. She is entitled to her privacy, though, and I’m glad that she found the right place and the right program to help her get through her issues.

Business Convention Tips

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

One of the best parts of going to trade shows is listening to presentations by professional speakers. The speeches by the CEO and department heads can be boring and predictable, but a good motivational speaker can bring the room to life and give you many good things to think about, well after the speech has concluded.

At our annual convention, we use a full day for sales training and include a motivational speaker at the breakfast session. We want to get everyone pumped up and wide awake for the entire day of work and learning. So we use a professional speaker and keep the less exciting company speakers for the general sessions at the beginning of the convention and to close the weekend.

The best sales training that we held for our company was in Florida, at Amelia Island. This is a luxury resort in Northern Florida and the facilities were perfect for our large group. We pretty much took over the whole place for the long weekend. We allowed plenty of time for everyone to play some golf and spend time on the beach, too.

I was heavily involved in the planning of the sales side of the events. We hired professional sales trainers to come in and work at round tables and panel discussions to kepp things lively and fresh. Even the Sales V. P. was impressed with the variety of topics that we covered and the selling tools that we were able to bring to the table.

Finding Tee Times

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Next month we will be spending a weekend in one of my favorite family-friendly resorts: Myrtle Beach. We have been going for years and always have a wonderful time. I was searching for resorts for golf in Myrtle Beach and have it all planned out.

Although the rest of the family wants to go for the beach and the ocean, I am going to enjoy 3 days of golf on the best courses in South Carolina. I found golf packages in Myrtle Beach that save me money and are strategically located near the beach as well as the best golf courses.

My boss told me about a web site that he likes to use to arrange for tee times: http://www.ttimesonly.com/ so that is the next step in planning my mini-vacation in Myrtle Beach. After I set up my gold games, then I will let the family plan around the times I’ll be golfing and we’ll all have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves.
