Compare Hosting Fees

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Normally a web site is put up and not much thought is given to the web site hosting unless you have a lot of problems. The whole industry of web site hosting and servers is relatively new and what they can do changes all the time. There are new equipment and new software and new problems that come up and have to be handled – and handled correctly.

My server has had a couple of glitches. The web site would not load for a few minutes here and there because they were doing maintenance or upgrades. That was no big deal. My my friend Wendy has been having horrible problems with her server company. Her web site has been totally down for 9 days. The hosting company was sold to a different company and they moved all the data from one location to a different one. But the data migration had a lot of problems and her web site suffered the brunt of the problems.

That kind of problem should be rare, but when it happens to you it is very upsetting. I know that she looked at other server companies to see if it made sense to move. She was comparing prices between the top 10 best hosting services. She read the hosting reviews and tried to consider more than just the monthly cost. She was just about ready to pull the plug and then her site came back up yesterday.

I hope that the site stays up now and that the migration problems are all solved. I feel badly for Wendy, but I trust that she will give them one last chance and if necessary she can change web site hosting companies at any time.

Mandatory Upgrade

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Usually I upgrade my WordPress software within a week or two of each new upgrade or new release. I don’t want to be the first to do it, as there is always the chance that something is wrong with the new version that won’t be discovered until thousands of users have installed and started using it.

The upgrades have always been something that I voluntarily did, because I trust the WordPress team to know what they are doing. I trust them to be taking the proper steps to test the software and to be sure that all the latest security measures are taken.

This latest upgrade is a “mandatory upgrade” because of some security issues. This bothers me a little. But I will comply. After all, WordPress is free to use and is the best blogging platform out there.

WordPress Now 3.0

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

I’m under the impression that anyone reading my blog knows that I am using WordPress for the blogging software. I discovered WordPress about 4 years ago. It has been a blessing for people who want an easy and free way to get their “stuff” on the internet.

this past year there were a lot of new versions released. They had some trouble with hackers and some new features that they wanted to get out there. So now we have version 3.0 – that’s notable.

Thank you to all the volunteers who work so hard to make WordPress as great as it is!

International Business

Monday, February 15th, 2010

One of the most interesting aspects of using the internet is that it is truly an international medium. I have been able to access newspapers all over the world, and participate in bulletin boards and discussions with people from a variety of different countries.

One of the most interesting bulletin boards that I found recently is based in India and helps the people having issues with various businesses as a public consumer forum.

One of my company’s franchisees is from India and he still has a lot of family there. He was in a meeting with me this morning and during a break he went online to check his emails and surf a few web sites. He showed me the website and shared some of the recent posts with me. It was truly fascinating.

There are a variety of topics available for comments and discussions. I read the computer forum and was very surprised to see how many complaints were lodged against all the major laptop manufacturers. It was a real eye opener and worth considering when shopping for a new laptop.

Not Free Anymore

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Thought it would be nice to send a free email card to some of my family over the weekend. I’ve always used the web site that Hallmark cards runs. They have nice designs and the site was easy to use.

But today when I went to Hallmark.com, I found out the they are not doing free email cards anymore. They want 99 cents for each email card, or you can sign up for a membership type thing and get unlimited cards for a flat fee each year.

I’ll have to think about that one. I like sending free cards and there are other sites that do it. But I don’t blame Hallmark for wanting to make a little money from their efforts. So I’ll think about it for a bit, and maybe sign up for the membership thing.
