My cousin Sharon and her husband have officially retired and moved to North Carolina. She says that the Raleigh area is very much like Fairfax, Virginia, where she was born and lived her whole life. It’s her husband who is from North Carolina and wanted to “move home.”

She is not used to living in a college town and gets very frustrated having to accommodate everything that goes one there with Duke University. she is amazed that the local TV stations will pre-empt prime time TV shows in favor of televising Duke basketball games.

Good thing she can watch her favorite TV shows on the internet. A lot of the hit major network shows are available online, either the same time they are broadcast on regular TV or within 24 hours of the original broadcast time.

Movies are available online too. So if her husband wants to watch the Duke basketball game on the TV, she can sign up for a service like Netflix and watch a movie on her laptop and they both get to watch what they prefer.

Moving wasn’t something we really did because we wanted to, we had to for my husband’s new job. I really miss my family but I went to http://www.wildbluedeals.com/satellite-internet/oklahoma/m/muldrow/ after we got settled to ensure I’d at least be able to email them and keep tabs with my sister’s blog (she’s got a new baby so she posts pictures all the time.) I actually like this new town although it’s smaller than I’m used to and I’m going to start looking for part time work once the boys start school. I don’t think I’ll have trouble making friends through church and all that but I think the biggest challenge is going to be finding a way to fill the void that I feel now that my family is so far away. I love them so much and they were such a big part of my daily life it’s really going to be an adjustment getting used to them not being around as often as they were when we lived just down the street, you know?

Thanks to Wm Rowe for the guest post!

The worst part of basic cable is the lack of good channels on my TV. I can never find anything worth watching, so it almost defeats the purpose of turning on the TV! I knew I needed to bite the bullet and sign up for something better, so I checked out www.ClearTVBundle.com and found a package that suited my needs. The best part was, I’ve totally got all the best movie channels like HBO and Showtime now! Everyone knows that’s where the best shows are! I actually enjoy the onDemand feature the best, going back and watching old episodes of classics like The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. I like HBO’s new offerings, but the old shows really can’t be beaten. I now know the meaning of “appointment TV,” although it’s nice being able to watch shows on my own time, too. I never knew how much I was missing until after I set up my premium channel connection, and now I’ll never be hurting for a good channel to watch. No more surfing for me!

The Dish Network is the 2nd largest U.S. satellite TV company, with DirecTV at Number One. This week, Dish outbid at least three other companies and bought Blockbuster, the one-time leader in video rentals in the U.S..

The purchase includes more than 1,700 Blockbuster stores, and gives Dish new ways to market its services, including kiosks in the Blockbuster stores to sell their satellite services.

I was very surprised to see so many ethnic references and portrayals, although my grandson did not seem to notice.

There are two or three different types of penguins shown in the movie. The main type is the Emperor penguin. But we had to look up the other ones and found a nice web site that showed pictures of the different types. It was a good learning experience to have that reference on the internet available while we had the movie fresh on our minds.

My brother, Walter, wants to give my parents a special gift for Christmas this year. He has managed to sneak out a big box of old movies from their house and is planning on changing them to digital format by using a Video Converter. My dad is an electronics freak and has always bought the latest and greatest of everything over the years. When I was a kid, he had an 8mm movie camera, then he upgraded to the Super 8 format and then he changed over to the Beta and VHS formats. He always wanted the newest technology.

Walter spent a lot of time looking into the whole process of changing old home movies to different digital formats, and a coworker told him last week how easy it was to get a Video Converter for Mac and watch his old movies on his Mac.

That gave him the idea to change the old home movies that my parents had in the attic and use an iPad Video Converter so my dad can watch them on his iPad. Nothing like trying to do all of this at the last minute! But I know my Dad will be thrilled to have the movies in iPad format and my mom will love being able to watch the movies and add a soundtrack and narrative on the disks.

I really enjoy books and movies that are based on real life circumstances or events. It gives you a great sense of connection to the story. The movie that we watched tonight, “Behind Enemy Lines,” was based on the rescue efforts by our military to retrieve a pilot who was shot down on June 2 1995 in the Serbia/Bosnia conflict.

The real pilot’s name was Scott O’Grady. Although he helped publicize the movie when it first came out, he did later criticize parts of it and eventually in 2002 he sued the production company for some misrepresentation and not getting his permission in advance. I suspect the real reason was that he expected some big money from is commercial success and did not get it. Strangely, I cannot find out if he won that lawsuit or not.

All in all, it is a very good movie and it was made to seem very real. I liked several scenes, including when he was in an area filled with trip wires and he figured it out but the men chasing him were killed by those explosions. Another good scene was in a shopping center that was under fire. In all the commotion, he was able to switch uniforms with another soldier and escape. Those types of ingenuity are surely what helped keep him alive until rescued.

Guest Post contributed by Buford Downs

Movies on demand is a great feature offered by my direct tv packages choice ultimate package. For a small fee, you can rent a movie to watch for 24 hours on your home television. These movies are usually new and some come out before a movie is released on DVD.

I find this service serves several purposes. It lets me preview movies and decide if I want to add them to my DVD collection. It keeps me up to date on the latest movies without paying movie theater prices. One price and the whole family can see it; anyone coming over to my house can see it. Throw in a few snacks, and you have a party.

I find this service also lets me select movies that I may not want to watch with the kids. I have also used my movies on demand to preview movies to decide who in the family can watch them. As I get busier, I find that I am spending more time watching movies because they complete a story and they are original. Movies on demand allows me to feed this need and conserve my time.

Movies on demand has become a fixture in my household. I now wonder what it was I did before I had this feature. I guess I watched a lot of television repeats.

It stars Matt Damon and is about the corruption and subterfuge going on with the war in Iraq. It had more than one set of bad guys, which made it a little confusing in the beginning. But after a slow start, I began to figure it out. I even pegged the ending, which I won’t spoil for you here.

We liked the movie overall. I wonder how much truth is behind the story line in this war and the Afghanistan war? Time will tell.

We have watched all sorts of alien movies, watched alien based TV shows and are even eating alien food.My favorite alien movie is now “Aliens in the Attic.” It has hilarious alien characters, the heroes are kids, and the whole movie is a giggle.

When we mixed up a batch of guacamole, he announced that it looked like alien poop. So we dipped a big clump of it and put it in our mouths with a big flourish. Then we proclaimed it to be delicious! We LOVE alien poop! And he ran screaming from the kitchen – in delight.

At the Academy Awards, Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for his starring role in the movie, Crazy Heart. So I have been very interested in seeing that movie and tonight we went to the multiplex at Opry Mills to watch it.

I have to say that Jeff Bridges was perfect for that role and it was a really good movie along with a great sound track. I want to buy the book and compare it to the screenplay. When it comes out on DVD, I’m going to definitely buy this movie to watch it again.
