My last trip to the recycling center put me over in Hermitage and I decided to drive a little further up the road to check on a few things. The next town up has a few stores that I don’t usually patronize, but I’ve been searching for a few specific items and thought I’d have a go with the stores in Lakewood. To my surprise, the new nursing home that has been under construction since March looks like it is about finished and should be opening soon.

There is a sign out front advertising a hiring fair. Evidently there will be a need for several CNAs, housekeepers and maintenance workers. My step daughter has been looking into the CNA programs here and was even recently checking http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/ to get an idea of how much she will need to spend on nursing uniforms.

Most of the nursing homes here will sponsor interested applicants while they attend school for their CNA certificate. The classes are widely available through technical schools and community college campuses. They have schedules for mornings, afternoons and evenings, so it is possible to work a job and also take classes. Once she has earned her CNA certificate, the nursing home will give her a full time position and all she needs is a week’s worth of uniforms to get started in her new job.

Tonight I watched a popular network show that was about a crime that had to be solved and how the series stars went about finding the perpetrator.

My thoughts afterward were that the killer took advantage of people who were ill and in desperate times, at the lowest points in their lives. That was despicable. On the other hand, the show made the point that treatment methods were more successful than the average treatment in California. I wonder how much truth might have been behind that statement, as I cannot find any real successful recovery rate statistics for California or any other states.

When I am evaluating a program or a service, I like to hear from customers and clients, not just the salesperson or the owners of the business. When people who found success are willing to step up and share their experiences, that means a lot to me.

Watching the BBC America cable channel gives me some great shows that aren’t seen in America, plus the commercials are different and interesting. For example, today I saw a commercial for Dyson. I’m sure you know about their invention for vacuum cleaners – it has a different way to create suction, plus the machine has a ball on the back for better maneuverability. Their commercial was geared toward the British audience, and even used a phrase that we never hear in the States, “a tiddly bit.”

So, I was inspired to learn a little more about Dyson, as I never thought much about them being a British company, but here they were advertising on the BBC channel. Turns out that the company does a lot more than just vacuum cleaners. I found out that Dyson hand dryers are made for public restrooms and restrooms in large manufacturing companies or office buildings, as an air dryer is more sanitary than cloth or paper towels. Personally, I believe that air hand dryers are better for the environment, too.

Dyson invented these cool airblade hand dryers that move air differently and more efficiently than the old fashioned hand dryers. They also make a special kind of cooling fan. All based on their unique way of looking at moving air – whether for suction or for ventillation and cooling.

There’s nothing worse than being out of town on a business trip and having a dental problem. My stepdaughter is on a business trip to Charlotte and when they went out to dinner she bit down on something in her burger and broke off part of her tooth. That hurts! The restaurant was totally apologetic and offered to pay her dental bill. So that’s a help. But she has to find a dentist in a strange town to see her on an emergency basis and that’s the challenge. She might have to just deal with a toothache until she can get back home to her own dentist.

How do you find a dentist when you are out of town? Or new to an area? I was worried about that very thing when I moved out to California. Luckily, I found one near the hotel that I lived in for the 2 months it took to find a condo out there. They helped me with regular dental work and they recommended a good Periodontist for me, too. After all, just about everybody over the age of 40 is at risk of gum disease.

Although my dentist in California was very good, I found out when I got back to Tennessee that her prices were more than double what I would pay here in Nashville. After all, the cost of living is very high in California. so you have to expect that the professional services will be higher, along with everything else.

While volunteering for the non profit, I was invited to several high level management training conferences. I think that attending those conferences was something that added a lot to my understanding of non profits and working with volunteers.

Volunteers can be a tough crowd to control and keep motivated. It is like herding cats. They all have different expectations and varying levels of skills. So a good manager has to know which people to recruit for the various committees and tasks. You have to be careful t no over use the good ones, keep the earnest ones busy, and motivate the reluctant ones to participate.

After 5 years with the non profit, I decided to take a break. It was so hard to see so many of our “consumers” sick and many passed away while I was involve with the Board. One month I had to attend 3 funerals of men whose families I had become very fond of. That was hard on my heart, even though I knew I was helping. I just needed a break and was gratified to be awarded the organizations “Volunteer of the Year” at their annual meeting. I do plan on going back, perhaps next year.

I saw this advertisement and had to wonder, what the hell is WRONG with this woman? Why on earth would anyone paint a little boys toenails bright pink? This makes not sense to me all. Little kids don’t need to be wearing makeup unless it is Halloween and part of their costume!

If the kid wants to paint something, couldn’t the mom find a coloring book or a model airplane or something for him to paint? When we were kids we were happy to have paper plates to color on! You don’t paint your body until you are in junior high school, and that’s for girls. Boys have other important things to do and worry about, like playing baseball or football and working on cars.

But more importantly, what does painting toenails have to do with selling children’s clothes? It’s not like they are selling nail polish!

Lunch has become such a problem for me. I am trying to watch my weight and not overdo hamburgers or other fattening meals. But I get sick of salads really fast. It is especially tough in the office, when everyone else goes out to the fast food places and bring their meals back to our kitchen to eat them. I smell the food and it makes my stomach growl.

Today I decided to go to the grocery store and buy some healthy lunch food items and take them back to the office with me. I can keep them in the refrigerator and just make a fast lunch myself. It will save me time and money, and hopefully this spare tire will start to wear off.

The only splurge on something unhealthy was a pack of bologna. It was on sale for $1 and it was so tempting – I caved and bought a pack to take with me for an occasional sandwich. What can I say? I like my bologna.

When you are thrust into the world of illness and disease, it can be overwhelming to find someone who will speak to you in plain English and not try to keep you helpless with an overuse of medical jargon. When my son was so very ill, we spent weeks upon weeks in the hospitals advocating for his care. He was too sick to speak up for himself. If someone spoke about things he didn’t understand, he just stopped listening – he couldn’t deal with the extra stress of not knowing the medical jargon.

The last month of his life we brought him home, in part to shield him from the stresses of the daily hospital routines. We were interested in finding out about hospice care, but there was a huge waiting list and he never got to use their services. So my wife and I fixed up his bedroom and we tended to him ourselves, the best we could. We had a hospital bed, an IV pole, oxygen tanks and all kinds of monitors and supplies.

Some things were given to us at the hospital or the doctor’s office. Other things we had to find out own sources. I found pulse oximeters for sale online and used one every two hours to monitor his blood oxygen levels. We were under strict orders to call the doctor immediately if the numbers dropped too low. And, eventually they did.

Our grandson has food allergies and I am so frustrated with his doctors who don’t seem to care at all about it. They have the attitude of, if its not causing severe reactions that interfere with his breathing, then don’t worry about it. But the allergies DO have an effect – in his appearance (hives and facial rashes) and his behavior (antsy, unfocused, loud, argumentative) . All I wanted to know is what exactly is he allergic to so we can avoid those foods. The doctors refuse to have him tested, stating that they feel there is no medical need for the tests.

So, on my own I am doing some research into food allergies and pediatric allergists that might be able to help him. I did fin a support group, called Kids With Food Allergies, but I am looking for much more detailed information, such as doctors in this area who can see him and online resources that go into detail about symptoms and causes..

There must be over a dozen flavors of Pop Tarts on the grocery shelf, and I’ve tried four or five of them. But I always seem to gravitate back to the frosted strawberry flavor. This is the one flavor that my dogs like to eat. Not that I buy them for my dogs. But every once in a while I like to break open a package and eat a few bites while I drink my morning coffee.

For some reason unbeknownst to me, if I open a package of any Pop Tart flavor other than frosted strawberry, the dogs could care less. They totally ignore what I am eating. But if I open the strawberry ones, the dogs line up in a begging row and demand that I share it with them.

As I believe the Pop Tarts might not be all that healthy and are probably not the best diet conscious choice, I don’t mind sharing the Pop Tart with the dogs. I end up getting only about three small bites, which is enough to satisfy my appetite for something sweet and it gets something on my stomach to head off the acid effect of my morning cup of coffee. So it’s a win-win situation when I share with the dogs.

But overall, this episode took on medical issues that most people are uncomfortable talking about and that made it interesting.

The episode addressed the need for all people to have access to medical care and that not everyone can use the conventional methods and institutions that exist today. However, someone who is not part of today’s medical institutions risks jail for practicing without a license.

A solution was not actually addressed or suggested within the story. However, I hope some forward thinking citizens use this as a touch stone or talking point to bring some new thoughts on affordable and accessible health care to people with no insurance and limited financial means.

For the past 3 or 4 years I have been drinking at least one cup of hot tea each night. I prefer the green tea, but once in a while I will drink black tea just to change up the taste and the routine. I started drinking tea because I heard of the health benefits but never really got specific information about them.

There was an article online that explained the health benefits of green and black teas in a little more detail. They have an amino acid that creates a boost for the immune system, called L-theanine. This amino acid is plentiful in both black tea and green tea, and the decaf versions have it, too.

Another tip from that site:

To get the benefit of up to five times more antioxidants from your tea bag, bob it up and down while you brew the tea.

A Harvard study recently concluded that people who drink 5 cups a day of black tea will have 10 times more virus-fighting interferon in their blood than others who do not drink tea. So I plan to kick up the consumption a notch and help my immune system as much as I can.

One of the guys in our Austin office was telling me today that he came home last week from a business trip to find his basement flooded. What a horrible thing to have to deal with when you are getting home, tired and miserable from being away and dealing with traveling. Then to find a foot of water in your house.

I bet he is like me, a lot of stuff gets stored in the basement and most of it can’t handle getting wet. But he also had told us that he was finishing out half the basement into a man cave, so he is dealing with water damage floors Austin and water damage to carpet Austin.

Evidently, the pipe to his water heater leaked or burst while he was out of town and the basement sump pump couldn’t keep up with the amount of water. No one knew there was a problem until he got home and had to deal with it.

Besides getting all the water out of the basement, he has to deal with pulling up all the carpet and padding that he just laid, as
water damage mildew Austin is a big problem from flooded basements. I am highly allergic to mildew and have always fought against mildew and mold in my house. I use bleach liberally around the basement and garage. But when you have a flooded basement, it is hard to deal with everything by yourself and get it done right. He is probably better off calling a professional restoration company to help.

The doors at my dentist’s office are just partial doors, on hinges so they swing in both directions. A little like saloon doors from the old west days. So while sitting in the dentist chair this afternoon, I watched dozens of pairs of feet walking up or down the hallway past my treatment room. most of the feet were wearing black moccasin style shoes, so I knew they were dental office staff. Their uniforms are a white lab coat, black trousers and black shoes.

There are several different staff members. Evidently each doctor has one or two personal assistants who work exclusively for that doctor. Then there are a few women who work in the dental lab, an x-ray technician, and three women who do the routine dental cleanings. All of them wear the same style medical uniforms, and there is no way to tell what their job function is by looking at their uniform.

Somehow the dentist himself has a slightly different lab coat uniform. The lab coat has his name and the dental practice embroidered on the left breast, and the coat itself is longer, with deep pockets. All of the other staff have little black and white name tags on their uniforms, but the dentists names are embroidered. I guess if the dentists have their names on the building, then they can certainly have their names embroidered on their lab coats, too.
