One of the best things about computers and the internet is the variety of games that can be played – both solitaire, against a computer robot or against other people in real time. The different types of games available are for all skill levels, from preschoolers to Bridge Masters.

I remember the very first game I played on a computer. It was a puzzle, adventure game. You had to type in each move as DOS code. You started out in t forest and you had to type in each move, going north or south, up or down, etc. It was totally addicting and everyone at work would try for weeks to solve the puzzle and beat the game.

Then we got a new computer that was pre-loaded with solitaire. The secretaries at work and anyone with a private office would spend hours at their desk playing Canfield, often caught by their supervisor and getting in trouble for playing games when they were supposed to be working. There was a lot of uproar among the ranks about feeling entitled to “take a break” and play a game or two on the company’s computer.

Now the computers allow us to get online and play thousands of games, often against real people from all over the world. It is amazing to be living and playing in the digital age.

Hard to believe that summer vacation is over for all the kids around here. A lot of school systems went back to school last week and the rest of them are returning this week coming up. So, I appreciate the warm weather, the sunshine, and the chance to go to the lake and swim or just chill out with a good book.

I like the people watching at the lake, too. The kids are running around, swimming and splashing, playing games and having fun. There is nothing like the laughter of a little kid to put a smile on your face.

Played a Spades game tonight and the opponents were killing us. My partner had a lot of difficulties with bidding. When the score got to a 300 point spread because my partner kept overbidding and getting us set, he left the game. He gets penalized for leaving before the game was over, but that left me with the challenge of finding a partner to replace him with a really bad point deficit. I decided to partner a Bot instead, and by golly, we ended up winning the game!

Just goes to show, never give up.

One of the extras that we noticed when shopping for our new home was that this house had a basketball hoop installed in the backyard, at the bottom of the driveway. In the back of the house was a large rectangle of level surface, which made me think that we could actually have some quality guy time shooting hoops back there. It was one of those emotional things that sell the house – putting the idea in someone’s head that appeals to them emotionally.

Of course, after we bought it and moved in, we quickly realized that the aggregate surface made bouncing a basketball almost impossible. We would have to pay for Basketball Court Resurfacing if we were serious about shooting hoops at home.

Of course, the home in the nicer neighborhoods, like Brentwood and Bellevue, have swimming pools and tennis courts in their backyards. One of their routine maintenance problems is Tennis Court Resurfacing and pool cleaning.

It’s not just the McMansion owners who have to deal with Tennis Court Resurfacing, there are plenty of country clubs, schools and apartment complexes who offer tennis as a recreational activity. When your sport requires a smooth surface for bouncing a ball, you can’t afford to have pits and patches that misdirect the ball’s bounce.

My son read about a web site that has some free flash games and he tried them out last night. The one that caught his attention was a game about zombies. Ever since he watched “I Am Legend” with Will Smith he has been fascinated by zombies. The game he tried is called boxhead 2. It was fast and easy and since it was free, he thought it was fun for a change.

Another game on the same site is called age of war, which claims to have won recognition as “Flash Game of the Year.” The game designer is from Israel, so I am sure they think of war and military tactics in a very different way from the way kids in the U.S. or other mostly peaceful countries might think of it.

Both games have a series of user comments by kids, which are annoying to me as an adult but he laughs at some of the things that are written by the kids. As Admin has deleted a lot of the comments, but most seemed to be either “good game” or “this game sucks” types of comments – all typical of preteen and teenage boys.

Both of the games are part of a site called YouSayToo, which is a way people can sign up blogs and write short posts for payment. The post covered a wide variety of subject and are mostly opinions or a recap of current events. I have not looked into their method of ablogging for money but it does seem to be a popular site.

It has been years since I have sat down at a round table and shuffled a deck of real playing cards. We used to play all kinds of card games, both with family members and friends, as a social activity. As kids we played Hearts, Canasta and a variety of solitaire games at home with whatever assortment of parents, brothers or sisters we could talk into filling 4 seats at the table.

Then, when we first got married, we played Hearts with the neighbors or pinochle with the in-laws. They also liked to play a variation of the game Pitch that they called, “Set Back.” It was fast and easy to learn and you could have a few drinks and laugh the entire game. Other games tend to be more serious and slow paced, and drinking can cost you a loss and hard feelings from your partner if you get careless.

Lately I have been playing Spades online. I do like that game. It was easy for me to learn, as I am a very good Hearts player. I would like to play Spades with real cards, but have not been able to find three other people who claim to know the game.

When driving on the interstate with my grandson, we play a little game to help pass the time. We count the trucks and keep score depending upon the color of the truck. Only the 18 wheelers count, and they have to be on the interstate or a bridge in motion. If they are parked, they don’t count.

The most popular truck color white – I bet 50% of all trucks are white. So we don’t allow the white ones to count in our little game. Usually my grandson likes to pick red and I’ll pick either blue or black. It is surprising how many trucks are one of those three colors, but there are also a lot of green trucks.

The game only lasts until we get off on the exit ramp and can no longer see the interstate. Sometimes it is only for about 10 minutes, and we can easily spot at least 7 or 8 trucks of his color choice and mine, and sometimes the game ends in a tie.

The new releases include the adventure movie called, “Prince of Persia.” It is a movie loosely based on a video game for the Playstation and Wii. I’ve tried to play the game and it is a little frustrating to figure out all the tasks or missions. But maybe the movie will be good.

The last game that was made into a movie that I watched was Hitman, which was an excellent movie. I hope this movie does the game justice.

Interesting facts: of 826 Sounds players who have appeared in at least one game for the Nashville Sounds since 1978, over 500 of those players have gone on to play in the major leagues.

Also, 39 Nashville Sounds players who have gone on to the majors have been named to their league’s post-season All-Star unit.

I’m happy to say that I have played in all three areas and Myrtle Beach is still my favorite area for both quality and variety, hands down.

Back in the 1980′s, I took at job at a consulting company who did a lot of business with the Federal Government and the U. S. military. A big part of doing business in those days was getting your connections to join you for a round of golf. So I learned how to play golf and I have been playing ever since.

Maybe it was the 80′s or maybe it was the DC area, but I never had a problem getting tee times smack on the time frame I wanted or very close to it. I could even get a quick pick up game if I had the chance to cut out of the office a couple hours and play 9 holes before dark.

But then I started going to Myrtle Beach every year and that is the one place in America known for their golf courses. Everyone goes there and everyone needs to know about www.48hourteetimes.com so their golf time can be based around convention schedules and family time at the beach. So setting up the right schedule ahead of time is very important.

The smartest thing to do about scheduling plus saving a little money on the course fees is to log in to the 48 hour tee times web site and set up everything right there. You have to admit that 48 hours is pretty quick when the courses are in such demand. But trust me, they are worth it!

The new leather wallet and the Playstation 3 game were a nice surprise and very much appreciated. But to be honest, the recognition and the thank you’s mean a lot more to me these days than the new “stuff.” Thanks, boys and girls!
