Scrubs for Comfort

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The past week I’ve made several trips downtown to the Vanderbilt campus. Until we moved here 20 years ago, I had not realized how important the Vanderbilt medical school is to this town. The teaching hospital has a reputation for being the very best in cutting edge new medicine and the best emergency room in the state.

While driving around looking for a parking spot, I am always impressed with how many young men and women are casually walking down the street wearing medical uniforms and scrubs. They don’t have the white masks and shoes covers, but they seem perfectly comfortable wearing the white and green hospital gear out on the street as if they just finished making rounds.

Then I realized that anyone can buy medical scrubs and wear them around the house on weekends or even around town on errands. They are lightweight, wash and wear with little care and are very affordable for casual clothes. They are better than sweatpants on a hot summer day.

I had the crazy thought that I could buy white lab coat and wear that at home while painting and refinishing furniture. It makes for a better painting smock than an old flannel shirt. I think I’ll go ahead and order one now, as we have a lot of repair work and renovation to do on the house after the weather cools.

Wicked Good Money

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The Broadway stage troupe of the hit play, Wicked, celebrated its 1000th performance on March 23, 2006. It has been going strong ever since, with both a Broadway show and a national touring troupe.

Wicked, an open-ended show, has enjoyed capacity crowds for almost every performance and it’s weekly gross  is over a million dollars. It broke the record for the highest weekly box office gross in Broadway history.

Based on the character in The Wizard of Oz, it is set in the days prior to Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas. It’s a great idea brought to life on the stage and deserves it’s long running success.
