Computer Upgrade

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

One more computer bites the dust and I’m shopping for a new one. Part of my wants to get a new, upgraded desktop model from Howard custom computers. I used to go to one of the big box stores and shop from a limited selection of expensive name brand computers. But then I discovered what a huge difference there can be with custom computers for about the same amount of money. With a custom desktop, I can get just the capabilities and features that I want and need, and pay for only those. With the pcs off the shelf, I am paying for a lot of things that I don’t need or want.

My burning question now is: should I get another desktop or should I get a custom laptop? I wonder if there is any advantage in the desktops anymore? At least with the laptop I can easily take it with me wherever I need to go. The desktop stays tethered to the home office. But it should be more reliable and probably more powerful. So I’m thinking hard on the two options and have to figure it out tonight. I need a computer at home by the weekend.

Compulsive vs Pathological

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

For years we would call a known liar a “pathological liar.” Which I believe loosely means that someone lies all the time, even about inconsequential things. Part of our society wants to believe that people can’t help themselves when they become habitual liars. But other parts of our society believe that people can indeed control that and when they choose to not tell the truth, then they must have some psychological defect.

Now I have come across the term “compulsive liar” as opposed to “pathological liar.” I wonder what is the thin line that separates the two by definition and why is it even necessary to have separate definitions of this anti-social trait. If you tell a lie and you know that it is wrong to tell a lie, then are you suffering from a psychological disorder or a character defect?

Tornado Touchdown

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Last night we had some heavy storms, just about dinner time. The sky got very black and I knew that it looked serious. Sure enough, just after the 5:00 news finished broadcasting, a severe storm hit downtown. Turns out we had a tornado touchdown, just north of downtown. Thank goodness it stayed north – no one downtown was hurt. They all just got a little wet.

Snack Food DuJour

Monday, July 26th, 2010

My grandson seems to be going through a change in his food preferences. We try to limit candy and sweets and focus on healthy food, but I think the Tooth Fairy has sharpened up his sweet tooth because that is all he asks for now. He wants cake, he wants ice cream and he wants candies.

At our house, an acceptable snack food is something like a banana, a cup of fruit yogurt, or a handful of nuts like cashews or almonds.

He was pretty frustrated that we did not have any cupcakes or ice cream. That might be what he gets at home, but that’s not what he can expect to get here at our house.
