Air Gun Rifles and Pistols

My grandson came home from school all excited about joining the Cub Scouts this year. They evidently had someone from the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts going around the schools today giving talks about joining the clubs and handing out notices for the kids to take home to their parents.

The part of the recruiting speech that got my grandson’s attention was the promise of learning how to use and shoot a bow and arrow and airguns. My grandson is so immersed in video games about the military that he is trilled at the thought of being allowed to handle any kind of real gun.

I remember as a kid that my dad introduced us to guns about this age – second grade. He bought us each our own airsoft gun and would take us out to the country to shoot on weekends. We shot cans set up on a big fallen tree and a variety of different targets – from paper bullseyes to plastic, life size deer set standing near the edge of the woods.

If we let him sign up for Cub Scouts and have to buy his equipment, I’d consider starting him off with an air gun rifle and then let him work his way up to airsoft pistols. I want him to learn about hunter safety and proper gun handling, just like I learned all those many years ago.
