Monte Cristo
By Ed. Filed in Food, Life |Years ago I would go to a Bennigan’s restaurant with one of my sons and have lunch. My favorite item on their menu was the Monte Cristo sandwich. The sandwich was huge and always more than I could eat. The only local restaurant that can top that is the Phillips Deli with their muffalatto sandwich.
The Monte Cristo is thick slices of white bread stuffed with ham and cheese, then battered and deep fried long enough to turn the bread a light brown and melt the cheese. Then it is dusted with a few shakes of powdered sugar and served with a sweet pickle. That is a great sandwich.
Too bad all the Bennigans are gone. The last one in this area closed over 10 years ago and they turned that space into a laundromat. I miss that Monte Cristo.
