Older Houses
By Ed. Filed in Home and Garden, Life, Wheels |Have you been inside an older house lately? Like the houses built in the 1950′s?
There is an older, established neighborhood near me that was built in the 1950′s. The whole subdivision was built primarily to house the military officers and their families who were stationed here.
They have a distinctive style – all brick, all one story ranch style, all with a carport for one car. Some of them have 2 bathrooms – those were the luxury models. Most have just one bathroom that the whole family shared.
What strikes me most is the carports. The carports protected the car from ahil damage and allowed the driver and passengers to enter or exit the car without getting wet if it was raining. But they were only large enough for one car, which is all that the average had or could afford.
Back in those days, the mother stayed home all day and did not need a car. The husband took it to work during the week, and then drove the family around on errands on Saturdays. If something came up where the mother had to have the car during the week – for a doctor’s appointment or something at the child’s school – then the wife would drive the husband to work and bring the car back for the day’s use. But often, the wife did not drive at all and the husband would just take time off from work during the week to drive the wive to her appointment.
Amazing how the times have changed.
